THE WISHA STORY

Wisha Gear was born out of necessity: my need to create and my love of adventure. I am a seamstress who has been a backpacking guide, a mom, a dress maker, costume designer, and whatever else. But I always find myself doing my best work the night before a trip. Without fail the family will be packing and I will be sewing. I've spent weeks on trail, designing gear instead of writing in a journal. Every road trip I try to address some inconvenience with a sewing project. Better living through fabric!

As to our name, our youngest daughter is from Ethiopia and "wisha" is the Amharic word for dog. We celebrate her culture and we want to give back to it. As this business grows, it is our hope to have many of our products made in Ethiopia, empowering women from that proud country with solid wages and steady income.

For me, Wisha Gear is a place to share my ideas and test new ones. I would love to hear from you about your own products, your own ideas, and I'd especially love to hear if your family enjoys our products as much as I enjoy making them.

MEET THE INSPIRATION

This is the real Wisha team. Our inspiration and our somewhat willing models.

VIRGINIA is a miniature dachshund and my sewing partner. If I made you a sleeping bag, you can bet she eyed it, thinking it was hers. In fact, she probably thinks it is just on loan to you.

BEAR is 50% Great Pyrenees, 50% Belgian Shepherd, and 100% baby. She belongs to our Ethiopian daughter and was almost named Wisha. When my daughter switched to Bear, I knew I'd found my brand.
